3. WHAT COOKIES ARE
Cookies are small text files that the websites visited send to the user’s device (computer, tablet, smartphone), where they are stored and then retransmitted to those same websites on subsequent visits. They are used for various purposes: carrying out computer authentication, session monitoring, storing information relating to specific user configurations, statistical analysis of browsing. Cookies installed directly by the Controller of the Site are referred to as “first-party cookies”; those installed by parties other than the Controller are referred to as “third-party cookies”.
4. COOKIES USED BY THE SITE
- a) Technical cookies (necessary)
These are the cookies essential for the proper functioning of the Site and for the provision of the services expressly requested by the user (for example, storing the preferences expressed through the cookie banner or managing access to the restricted area). Pursuant to the Maltese legislation transposing the ePrivacy Directive, such cookies do not require the user’s prior consent, as they are strictly necessary for the provision of the service explicitly requested. Legal basis: legitimate interest of the Controller and performance of the requested service (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- b) Analytics cookies
The Site may use analytics cookies to collect, in aggregate form, information on the number of users and on how the Site is consulted, for the sole purpose of optimising its operation. Where such cookies are configured so as to reduce the identifying capacity of the data (for example by masking significant portions of the IP address) and are used by the Controller solely for its own statistical purposes, they are treated in the same way as technical cookies as regards the information and consent regime; otherwise, their installation is subject to the user’s prior consent.
- c) Profiling cookies and third-party cookies
The Site does not use profiling cookies or third-party cookies for behavioural marketing purposes. Should services entailing the installation of third-party cookies be activated in the future (for example advanced statistical analysis tools, maps, embedded videos or social plugins), this Cookie Policy will be updated in advance and the user will be asked for explicit consent by means of a dedicated banner, in accordance with the Guidance Note on Cookies Consent Requirements published by the Office of the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) of Malta.
5. LEGAL BASIS AND CONSENT
Pursuant to Regulation 5(1) of the Processing of Personal Data (Electronic Communications Sector) Regulations (S.L. 586.01), the storing of information, or the gaining of access to information already stored, in the user’s device is permitted only if the user has given his or her consent, having been provided with information in a simplified manner, with the exception of technical cookies strictly necessary for the provision of a service expressly requested. Consent to the installation of non-technical cookies may be withdrawn at any time, with effect for the future, by changing the browser settings or the preferences expressed through the Site’s cookie banner.
6. HOW TO MANAGE COOKIES THROUGH THE BROWSER
The user may at any time manage his or her cookie preferences directly from the settings of his or her browser, which allow cookies already installed to be deleted, their future installation to be blocked, or a warning to be received before they are installed. Please note that disabling technical cookies could impair the use of certain functionalities of the Site. Instructions for managing cookies are available on the support pages of the main browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge).
7. TRANSFERS OF DATA OUTSIDE THE EU
Should data be transferred to countries outside the European Economic Area in connection with the use of IT services and platforms related to cookies, the transfer will take place in compliance with the safeguards provided for in Chapter V of the GDPR (for example adequacy decisions of the European Commission or standard contractual clauses).
8. RETENTION PERIOD
Technical session cookies are automatically deleted when the browser is closed. Any persistent cookies are retained for the period indicated at the time of their installation and, in any event, for a period no longer than that necessary to achieve the purposes for which they were installed, in compliance with the principle of storage limitation (Article 5(1)(e) GDPR).
9. DATA SUBJECT’S RIGHTS AND AMENDMENTS TO THIS COOKIE POLICY
For the exercise of the data subject’s rights in relation to the processing described in this Cookie Policy, reference is made to the Site’s Privacy Notice, of which this Cookie Policy forms an integral part.
The Controller reserves the right to amend or update, in whole or in part, this Cookie Policy, including as a result of changes in the applicable legislation or in the cookies actually installed on the Site. Users are therefore invited to consult this page periodically.
